UPSC Civil Services Exam

For millions of aspirants from all over the nation, joining the Indian public services, which include the premier services like IAS, IPS, and IFS, is the career of their dreams.

Why Civil Services?

The backbone of the nation's administrative system is the Civil Services. Three of the most favored services under this are the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). The chance for IAS officers to hold senior strategic positions within the Union Government and State Governments makes IAS the most popular of these services.

Examination Process

Candidates must pass a three-phase selection procedure and compete in the Civil Services Exam (CSE), which is administered by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), in order to be chosen for these highly sought-after positions. The Civil Services Preliminary Exam (Prelims), Civil Services (Main) Exam (Mains), and The Personality Test are the three phases (Interview).

How to Apply

  • Candidates must submit their applications online through the UPSC website.
  • Candidates must complete the two-stage online application form, which has two sections: Part I and Part II should be completed in accordance with the guidelines on the aforementioned website.
  • The candidates must deposit a fee of Rs. 100/- (Rs. One Hundred only) in any State Bank of India branch in cash, by using the bank's net-banking service, or by using any Visa, Master, or RuPay credit or debit card. Candidates who fall under the categories of SC, ST, women, or persons with benchmark disabilities are exempted from paying the fee.
  • Before beginning to fill out the online application form, a candidate must have both his or her photo and signature properly scanned in the .jpg format, with the photo file size between 3 kB to 40 kB and the signature file size between 1 kB to 40 kB.
  • Applicants ought to refrain from submitting several applications. When there are many applications, the Commission will give preference to the ones having the highest Registration ID.
  • As the Commission may utilize electronic means of communication to reach candidates at various stages of the examination process, applicants must ensure that they are submitting their genuine and active e-mail IDs when filling out their application forms.

Plan of Examination

The Civil Services Exam consists of two phases that follow one another:

Phase 1: The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type), which determines who advances to the Main Examination; and 2. The completion of the Online Application Form, which has two parts, Part-I and Part-II, in accordance with the guidelines posted on the aforementioned website.

Phase 2: The Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview), which is used to choose applicants for the various Services and jobs.

*Candidates must submit a Detailed Application Form if they are declared qualified for the Civil Services (Mains) Examination (DAF).

First Stage Information

  • The General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II are the two 200-mark papers that make up the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination.
  • The GS Paper-II, generally referred to as the Civil Service Aptitude Test or CSAT, is qualifying in nature and requires only a candidate to receive 33% of the possible points.
  • At this stage, questions of the objective type (multiple choice) are asked. The marks attained at this point are solely used to determine merit in the preliminary examination; they are not used to make a final selection. One becomes eligible for the following exam level after passing the preliminary exams.

Second Stage Information

  • The "written stage" of the exam is called the Civil Services (Main) Examination. There are nine papers in all, however only seven papers' marks are used to determine the final merit list. A candidate must achieve the minimal qualifying marks set each year by UPSC in the remaining two examinations. The Mains examination's question papers are of the traditional (essay) variety.
  • A board of experts evaluates each candidate's personality during the Civil Services Personality Test. There are inquiries about topics of general interest to the candidate. The goal of the interview is for a panel of knowledgeable and objective observers to determine whether the candidate is personally qualified for a career in public service. The goal of the test is to evaluate a candidate's mental capacity.

*Final rank of a candidate in merit list depends upon the marks scored in the second stage only i.e., written and Interview.
